Critical Analysis of Advertising Message

Who is the intended audience of the message?
The intended audience of the message are older women between the ages of 40 and 60. This ad also appeals to the mass youth group as well.

What elements of the message make it an effective (or ineffective) form of persuasion?
The illustration includes a happy atmosphere with multiple people smiling and having a good time getting a Coke. It it also effective in copy emphasizing that good taste is for all ages. 

How does the message utilize and/or influence popular culture?
This message for Coke emphasizes fun and good times, making Coke a hip product for everyone to try. During this time Elvis Presley and rock n roll were big, making this era about fun and good times.


Comprehensive Analysis 

Describe the theme of advertising that you choose:
  • What they are selling- Soda, Coca-Cola
  • The time period the ad would fit into- 1958, 50's
  • The advertising method they used- National Geographic, Magazine. This is a very simple and modern ad that focuses on the large illustration. There also is a prominent headline. The message is quickly interpreted by the reader.
  • Why the item or product would be important to someone from that time period- Coca-Cola portrays happiness and during this era good times were emphasized with music and pop culture. Pleasure in leisurely activities were of importance. 

How advertising is a reflection of and a form of culture during the time period
Identify examples and portrayals of various ethnic, racial, and other stereotypes
During this time an ad featuring all white people was standard. The ad also portays older women having a good time with young people. This shows how the up and coming youth culture is impactful on everyone.
